DataGuard with Nightfall
Nightfall finds it everywhere. We fix the document so the work can continue.
Nightfall is a detection and response layer across a company's whole SaaS estate. DataGuard is a document transformation engine with legal-domain depth. A platform running Nightfall still has to answer what happens to the contract PDF once something is found in it. That is the part we build.
Nightfall tells you sensitive data is there, across every surface you connect.
DataGuard returns the file with the sensitive parts removed, cited to the rule, ready to send.

// 01 What Nightfall AI is good at
Coverage is the point, and it is broad
SaaS apps, endpoints, browsers and AI tools including public assistants, connected by OAuth rather than an inline network appliance. That breadth is real and it is not what we do.
Detection quality is their engineering
Trained detectors rather than regex and keyword lists, weighing context so a sixteen-digit number in a phone list is not treated like a card number. They publish precision figures and stand behind them.
API-first, like us
A developer platform with a documented API rather than a console you are locked into, which is why the two compose cleanly instead of fighting for the same integration surface.
// 02 Where the boundary sits
The layers meet at one point and diverge immediately. Nightfall answers where sensitive data is. DataGuard answers what the document should look like when it leaves.
| Nightfall AI | DataGuard | |
|---|---|---|
| Unit of work | A finding: this content, in this app, matches this detector.1 | A file: this PDF or DOCX, transformed, with a receipt. |
| What comes back | Detection, alerting, and workflow actions such as quarantine or delete.2 | A rendered document in the original format, with the passages removed or aliased. |
| Domain depth | Horizontal: PII, PHI, PCI, credentials and secrets.1 | Vertical: attorney-client privilege, work product, and the statute the rule came from. |
| Who approves | Policy and workflow automation, tuned by a security team.2 | A named reviewer clears every flagged item before the file leaves. |
// 03 What we would build with them
We would rather be the transformation step inside someone else's detection platform than argue about whose console a customer opens. Concretely, and we will do the engineering:
DataGuard as a remediation action
A Nightfall workflow that currently quarantines a file could call DataGuard instead and get back a cleared copy. The finding becomes a fix rather than a block, and nobody has to choose between shipping the work and protecting it.
Detector handoff, both directions
Their detectors are strong on the horizontal set and ours are strong on privilege and legal entities. A shared entity payload lets each platform use the other's findings rather than re-scanning the same bytes twice.
Legal vertical as a joint offer
Nightfall covers a firm's SaaS estate. We cover what leaves it. That is a complete answer for a law-firm customer and neither of us has it alone.
Deployment parity
We run in your cloud or fully air-gapped, on our own models with no third-party AI. If a joint customer needs the transformation step inside their own boundary, that is a configuration rather than a roadmap item.
// 04 Questions we get asked
- Does DataGuard replace Nightfall?
- No. Nightfall detects sensitive data across your SaaS estate, endpoints and AI tools. DataGuard transforms a document so it can be sent. A platform running Nightfall still has to decide what happens to the file after a finding, and that is the step we are.
- Can DataGuard and Nightfall run together?
- Yes, and that is the design we would build toward. A Nightfall workflow that quarantines a file today could call the DataGuard API instead and receive a cleared copy back, so a detection becomes a fix rather than a block.
- What does DataGuard add that a horizontal DLP does not?
- Legal-domain depth and a rendered file. DataGuard detects attorney-client privilege and work product, cites the rule each removal came from, and returns the document in its original format with a reviewer's approval recorded against it.
